Day 4 – First Day in the Bush

Last night really did turn out to be a great sleeping night….earplugs were a blessing! We awoke with anticipation of our first ride to the bush clinic in Coton, but first we enjoyed a tasty breakfast of french toast and Haitian grits.

Once down the hill to the clinic building we were ‎all divided onto specific motorcycles…The Sons of Anarchy got nothin’ on us. Shortly after, we were on the rode to Bassin Bleu and then into the mountains. The ride was shorter this year…at least for me, since I was not required to get off the moto and run alongside this time. Despite the shorter duration, the distance remains the same and I am again astounded that these people walk so far just for the necessities. Read More

Day 3 – Back to Work!

Well, soon after lights out last night, the wildlife made itself known quite well. We heard the dogs protecting their territory, donkeys braying, roosters crowing….and yes, there were bears….bears, bears everywhere. Regardless‎, we all managed to drift off to sleep.

We also got quite cold at night and were looking for ‎something to cover up…definitely cooler at night in the countryside. Of course, shortly after the roosters began crowing in earnest around 5 AM, the dawn began breaking and the temp began warming. Soon the sun was beating down and it turned to a balmy day.  Read More

Day 2 – Back to Jolivert

As expected, last night was an early night by our standards….unless of course you were less than 20 years old. As all us “old folks” were turning out the lights at 9 PM, Lindsay was suiting up in her best Under Armor to challenge the boys at 2 on 2 basketball. Once showered though, most of us were fast asleep getting much needed rest. I slept so well that I didn’t even realize I had lost an hour with daylight savings time….turns out Haiti decided to observe the time change this year. I awoke to the now familiar and cherished sound of roosters…so many roosters….sounded like all the roosters I have ever heard in Haiti just outside our windows…music! No matter, we all seemed to rest well and once treated to eggs, toast and fresh fruit, we were ready to load up for the journey up the coast and inland to Jolivert.  Read More

Day 1 – Never Too Old for a Road Trip

So for those who follow our travels from year to year, you will not be surprised to learn that once again Mother Nature threw us a curve ball. Months of planning and preparation and all it took was about 12hrs of snow and ice to shut down Greensboro and cancel our flight. Sounding familiar to you 2010 travelers? Well this time it happened during the day as people were already on their way to check in to our overnight hotel (NOT the Roach Motel of last year but a Hampton Inn no less). We were to have our now traditional team dinner, one last hot shower, a good night’s rest and awaken excited for the week ahead in our  “little piece of heaven”….yeah, not so much! Read More

Prayers Needed NOW!!

IMG_00000034I generally do not use this forum to highlight specific individuals, but one of our own is in need of your prayers NOW!  I regret to inform you all that Dr. Peter Whitehead will be unable to join us this year, as originally planned, for our return to Haiti next month. He was just recently diagnosed with a malignant tumor of his chest wall and will be initiating radiation therapy ASAP, leading to major surgery in the next couple months. Peter is an integral member of the Project Starfish Haiti family and I know you all – family, friends and supporters, will join us as we pray for him and his family as they navigate this challenging time in their lives. We, the 2014 Team, and most certainly the people of Haiti will miss your presence “Dr. Peter”, but I have no doubt you will be with us as we are with you….every step of the way!  May we prove the power of prayer and positive thinking with your speedy and full recovery.

Be Strong My Friend and NEVER forget….Love From ALL,

Adam
